JOHN BECKMANN, FOUNDER & PRINCIPAL DESIGNER

There is a particular kind of discipline that comes from taking things away rather than adding them. It's the discipline John Beckmann learned early — as an apprentice to Joseph P. D'Urso, one of the original architects of American minimalism — and it has shaped every project Axis Mundi has taken on since.

Beckmann trained in architecture, interior, and industrial design at Parsons School of Design before founding Axis Mundi in 2004. What set the studio apart from the start wasn't a signature material or a recognizable motif — it was a refusal to treat architecture and interiors as two separate jobs handled by two separate teams. A wall, a light fixture, and a chair are, in Beckmann's view, the same design problem at different scales. That conviction is why Axis Mundi designs its own furniture and objects alongside its buildings, rather than sourcing them after the fact.

The studio's range reflects that same instinct for coherence across scale: from the quiet recalibration of a combined Upper East Side apartment, to the interior architecture of residences at 432 Park Avenue, to conceptual proposals for institutions — a reimagined cathedral in Strasbourg, a redesigned Cape Cod Museum of Art. Each project, regardless of size or program, is approached with the same opening question: what does this space actually need to say, and what can be removed until only that remains.

That approach has earned recognition beyond the studio's client list — the ARCHMARATHON award for Best Residential Interior, a Graham Foundation grant for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, and features on Bloomberg TV and NBC's Open House. Beckmann has also carried that thinking into architectural education, serving as a visiting critic at Yale School of Architecture, Pratt Institute, and Parsons, and editing The Virtual Dimension: Architecture, Representation and Crash Culture (Princeton Architectural Press, 1998) — an early and still-cited examination of how digital tools were beginning to reshape architectural thought.
