JOHN BECKMANN , FOUNDER
For two decades, Axis Mundi has approached architecture and interior design as a single discipline rather than two separate crafts. Founded in 2004 by John Beckmann — a Parsons-trained architect and designer who apprenticed under minimalist Joseph P. D'Urso — the studio has built a reputation for interiors that feel inevitable rather than decorated: pared back, materially rich, and precisely proportioned.
Beckmann's work has earned recognition including Best Residential Interior at ARCHMARATHON, a Graham Foundation grant for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, and a MacDowell Colony Fellowship, alongside features on Bloomberg TV and two nominations for HGTV's Designer of the Year. He has taught as a visiting critic at Yale School of Architecture, Pratt Institute, and Parsons.
Every Axis Mundi project — from a combined apartment on the Upper East Side to a proposed cathedral in Strasbourg — starts from the same question: what does this space need to say, and what can be removed until only that remains.
